With a new year in full swing, everyone seems to be super excited about their goals and resolutions while actively implementing a plan of action to achieve them. I even set some pretty overarching goals myself this year.
I understand there’s no more talking about improving my life in 2015; January is here and it’s time to put in the work and effort in order to see positive results.
While I’m excited about my plans along with everything I’ve taken on this year, lately I can’t help but feel overwhelmed and a bit stressed. I’ve always had a lot going on but with plans to add more to that mix, I know I need to focus on my well being and not let anxiety and stress get the best of me because everyone goes through rough patches like these.
At the end of the day, you have nothing without your health. All the money I save and use to pay off my students loans will be great in the long run but maintaining health and wellness is first and foremost.
If you’re feeling the ‘new year anxiety’ like me as you gear up to work hard to reach your annual goals, here are 9 easy ways to maintain your health and wellness.
Improve Your Diet
You are what you eat. Adding more leafy greens, fruits and protein to your diet and reducing fats and sugars, tons of starches and greasy food like pizza and fries is going to make you feel much better. ‘Comfort food’ only makes you feel good temporarily.
Once the heavenly effect of butter pecan ice-cream wear offs, you’ll be feeling sluggish, bloated and cranky again. It’s okay to have sometimes, but shouldn’t be a daily occurrence. For me, my main problem was candy and sugary drinks. I recently swapped out my gummies for sweet and tangy fruit and I started making my own flavored water at home in order to treat my body much better.
Too many adults skip this crucial meal. A healthy breakfast, even if it’s just cereal, yogurt and a banana, can help give you not only nutrients but the energy and focus needed to concentrate and perform daily tasks with ease. Breakfast is the most affordable meal so there really are no excuses to skip it, not even time. I make my breakfast in between getting ready in the morning and I take it with me to eat in the car or when I get to work. It’s either that or I’m super cranky and distracted 🙂
Walk or Run
Running is one of the easiest ways to stay fit, healthy, and give your heart a nice workout. If you can’t run or exercise 2-3 times a week, start by taking walks every other day. Anything that gets you up and moving around is better than doing nothing.

Get Some Sleep
Getting the proper amount of sleep is the simplest thing you can do to maintain wellness. Experts say, since your body gets worn out by all that you do each day getting anything between 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep each night is ideal to recharge. So if you spend 10 hours looking at a computer screen each day and only allow yourself 5-6 hours of sleep each night you may be wearing your body down and depreciating your health.
Prioritizing your tasks for the day will help you be able to recognize when you’ve reached your limit for the day and get some rest. If you find that you are more productive at night, naps during the day will definitely help, but still try to get at least 8 hours of sleep.
Have Some ‘Me Time’
Does anybody do this anymore? I know I struggle with making time for myself, by myself. By keeping busy with work and being a mom, my personal preferences are often pretty low on the priority list.
So I’ll challenge you (and myself) to find a leisure activity that relaxes you whether it’s reading, crocheting, going for a bike ride etc. and fit it in to your weekly schedule. Sometimes shifting your focus from the stressful aspects of your life will allow you to refocus and release that unhealthy stress and anxiety you’ve been holding onto.
Visit Your Doctor
Visiting the doctor at least once a year is highly recommended to make sure your body is functioning properly and to prevent any health risks. In this case what you don’t know can hurt you and it’s never okay to put your well being on the line for work or any other related reason.
It may be a dreaded check-up but then again it’s only once a year and you can knock out a visit to your doctor, the dentist and any other healthcare professional all around the same time to get it over. The peace of mind will be worth it.
Take a Break
While vacations are a nice way to relax and distress, realistically we all can’t vacation as often as we’d like. Taking a break doesn’t have to involve leaving the country and going MIA for a month.
It can mean taking a day off to relax and focus on a leisure activity or personal interest, spending time with a friend, or even taking a nap when you have time. Lately Ray and I have been taking a break on one evening out of the week by turning our phones off and staying away from the computer for a few hours. Just doing this can work wonders.
Keep Good Company
Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people can make all the difference in your life. Sometimes the people we interact with can bring a negative vibe with them and cause you to endure unnecessary stress and anxiety. Being around friends and loved ones who value and practice healthy behavior and a healthy lifestyle with make such a big difference in your own life.
Meditation is something I have not really tried in depth and this falls more into the wellness category. But from what I know, meditation can be calming and increase mindfulness. Meditation is simply a relaxation technique but it is very intentional and whether you choose to practice poses, deep breathing, or focusing in on a thought, the hopes are that your body and mind will become relaxed, calm, focused, and rejuvenated.
