With a new year in full swing, many people are focusing on improving all aspects of their lives. From my personal experience it seems like some people are super joyful and seem to have it all together, and others are a hot mess either being negative, unhappy or ungrateful and uninterested in getting their life in order. Have you ever wondered though, what the true meaning of life is and the key to leading a happy and successful life with few regrets?
The Secret is a popular self-help book by Rhonda Byrne that was published in 2006. A large portion of the book promotes the law of attraction and claims that positive thinking can create life-changing results such as increased wealth, health, and happiness. The Secret contains wisdom from modern-day teachers – men and women who have used it to achieve health, wealth, and happiness.
While I may not resonate 100% with everything in this book, I do believe there is a “secret” to reaching overall wellness, happiness, and maybe even wealth. I’m definitely not a life coach or expert by any means but I do have a little theory I’d like to share with my version of The Secret, and while this may not be news to some, it’s definitely something we need to be reminded of this year as we make life improvements.
Always Make More Than You Spend, Save and Invest the Difference
This is a ground rule for me because if you spend every single dollar you earn, you will be forever locked into a state of dependency on your money and that just really sucks. Plus, if you spend everything you earn, you’ll always feel like you have nothing left. It’s very easy to become a slave to your money and spend countless hours and years working day in and day out with nothing to show for it.
Saving a percentage of your income is the first step in gaining control of your money and your life choices. Investing will most likely help your money grow into an asset. Too many times, I see people who can’t switch careers fields, can’t move to a new city or travel because their financial situation is holding them back. Spending less than you earn gives you security, assurance, and the option to make life choices confidently without having to worry so much about where money will come from and whether you can afford it or not.
Practice Gratitude and Be Content. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
These last few years I’ve learned that practicing gratitude and contentment is so important if you want to be happier and lead a better life. I’ve realized that nothing in life is promised, not even the moment when you open your eyes to start a new day. Life itself is precious and so is time. Time stops for no one and we will never be able to turn back time even for a second. You will never be able to get back the time you spend reading this post 🙂 When I put things into this perspective, I can’t help but be grateful for how my life is and the people who are in it.
I don’t’ have everything I want and need, and I still have many goals to achieve, but I’m content with my life and I’m not going to compare my beginning to someone else’s middle. Being jealous or envious of other people and what they have is an ugly trait that only hurts yourself in the end. The way I see it, there is always someone who’s better off than you and there’s always someone who’s doing worse. So with that being said, could we ever truly keep up with the Jonses even if we tried?
Set Goals in All Areas of Your Life, and Work Actively to Achieve Them
Setting goals is the key to success. I find that successful and famous people make their accomplishments look so easy. But I know they had to set clear goals, work hard, and create a process in order to achieve them. I kind of fell off on setting clear goals these past few years but I’m back on track with my plan of action for 2015 and I couldn’t be happier about my goals. Setting vague goals like I’d like to start working out or I’d like to graduate college in a few years are not effective and might not work out. Setting clear, specific goals including what you would like to achieve, how you plan to achieve it, and a projected date to check in and assess your progress is the best way to achieve your goals and reach success.
Change Your Mindset to be Open-Minded About Change and Confident About Your Life Choices
This is where the law of attraction referred to in The Secret comes into play. I agree that in order to explore everything life has in store for you, you must change your mindset from negative to positive thinking. Positive energy is always good and uplifting. It’s not that simple though. Thinking positive along with being confident and open-minded will open many doors and opportunities to acquire wealth, success, love, and overall wellness. Some people may call this ‘young people’ energy since young adults act so invincible and always so optimistic and open-minded about their lives and their future. But anyone at any age and any stage of their life can alter their mindset to focus on positivity and be open to change.
For example, if you’re closed-minded about your life and you can only see yourself going down one career path, you may find yourself stuck in an unfulfilling job and afraid to venture out and develop a new passion. This is why I’m so happy I didn’t get stuck on writing only one single niche. I love to write about money and personal finance, but I also love to write about fashion, travel, education, relationships, parenting and much much more. Heck, I’m even passionate about marketing and PR and I would still be just as happy if I had the opportunity to establish a career in culinary arts since I love cooking and baking a lot.
I also don’t like when people say they have ‘a type’ when it comes to relationships and dating. What the heck does ‘a type’ mean? Does that mean if a man isn’t 6’5” with brown hair, a goatee, and an office job you’re not interested? I’m so glad I was open-minded about finding a SO because when I first met my boyfriend it definitely wasn’t love at first sight and he wasn’t initially the type of guy I could see myself going for (love you babe!). We were just classmates and friends for a few months and by being positive and open to change we were able to form a wonderful relationship and I’m so grateful for what we have and that I took a chance with him.
